The history of discovery of the American state of California begins with Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. The year was 1542. Cabrillo, who was a Portuguese navigator, was in the employ of the Spanish crown, sailed Northwards from Mexico to explore and expand the boundaries of the Spanish empire. Seeking the path to riches , spices and wealth – the same Northwest Passage that Columbus had sought as a route to the Indies of Asia , he sailed and tacked up to the coast of what is now Baja on the Monterrey Peninsula, landed at San Diego and then pushed onwards to Santa Catalina Island, Point Conception. Monterrey and Point Reyes.
Juan Rodrigo Cabrillo, a Portuguese explorer sailing for Spain, discovered Monterrey Bay in 1542, and Sebastian Vizcaino visited the bay in 1602. But it was not until 1770 that the area was settled. On the south shore of the bay, Gaspar de Portola and Father Junipero Serra established the first of Spain’s four California presidium and the second of the Fransiscans’ 21 Alta California missions. One year later Father Serra moved the mission to its present site on the Carmel River.
Until the middle of the 19th century, Monterey was California’s liveliest and most important settlement. Beginning the century as the Spanish capital of Alta California, it became the Mexican capital in 1822 and the American capital in 1846. After the discovery of gold in 1848, San Francisco took over as California’s number one city. Monterey’s 20th century role centers around its tourist and waterfront attractions.

It can be said and detailed that by far the two most read and famous mystery novels and novelettes would include Frank Norris’s McTeague : A Story of San Fransisco, a violent tale of love and greed set at the turn of the 20′th century . The second choice of a must read book , set in the Bay Area, would be Dashiell Hammett’s . “The Maltese Falcon” . Indeed Mr. Hammett might well be called an “American Master”.
The Maltese Falcon is a most steamy detective novel that captures the heart and seedier side of San Fransisco in the era of the 1920’s.
