The history of discovery of the American state of California begins with Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo. The year was 1542. Cabrillo, who was a Portuguese navigator, was in the employ of the Spanish crown, sailed Northwards from Mexico to explore and expand the boundaries of the Spanish empire. Between 1769 and 1823 , he and his successor , Padres Fermin Francisco de Lasuen , established a chain of 21 missions from San Diego to Sonoma. Fortified with presidos , they became the backbone of Spain’s and the Spanish colonial empire.
