San Diegan on San Clemente, California
America’s railroads are associated more with interior valleys and broad plains than open ocean. But two trains, the “San Diegan” from San Diego to Los Angeles, and the “Coast Starlight,” which continues from Los Angeles en route to Seattle, parallel the coast, passing areas inaccessible by automobile.
With their dining cars, sleeping compartments, and observation cars, they are a flash from the American past, part of Amtrak’s 24,000 miles of track, final vestige of the nation’s once-proud rail system. In the coy of its three-hour route the “San Diegan” travels for an hour along the shore, taking in the sights from Del Mar to Dana Point. It rumbles past Los Penasquitos Marsh Natural Preserve, a nesting place for migratory birds, then rims a series of lofty sea cliffs, which fall away to reveal narrow bands of sandy beach.
www.fortunawebs.com
There are four other marshes and lagoons en route, representing some of California’s most vital wetlands. Along the way lies one of the nation’s major centers for cut flowers and ornamental plants. Then further north Camp Pendleton, a Marine base and site of frequent military manuevers, stretches along 17 miles of prime coastline. Another unsettling sight, the San Onofre nuclear power plant, flashes by before the train enters San Clemente, home to President Richard Nixon during his ill-fated ad ministration. From here the “San Diegan” turns inland to the old mission town of San Juan Capistrano and cuts through the heart of Orange County.

Coast Starlight passing through McCreddie Springs.
Picking up the baton in Los Angeles, the “Coast Starlight” continues north past ticky-tack homes, those proverbial houses on the other side of the tracks, and squat, blocky office buildings stained with graffiti. It arrives at the ocean in Oxnard and parallels the Pacific, shuttling past stretches of open water populated with surfers and occasional fishermen.
From here north the tracks hone a fine line along sharp rockfaces. Farm houses flit by on one side, while looming offshore are oil rigs and the Channel Islands. The mission towns of Ventura and Santa Barbara are stations on the itinerary. Then the train crosses high trestles and climbs above the shore toward Point Concepcion. This is California’s geographic turning point, where the coast veers sharply right and the beaches, which earlier pointed south, turn to face the west.
Beyond the lighthouses at Point Concepcion and Point Arguello rise the missile silos of Vandenberg Air Force Base. This is the western spaceport for the Space Shuttle, whose launch pads and support building rest along the tracks. It is also headquarters for a Strategic Air Command launch site complete with satellite stations and Minute man missiles. The entire area, otherwise closed to the public, is open to view from the “Coast Starlight.”
Grand finale to the coast portion of the journey are the Nipomo Dunes, massive, wind-shaved sand hills that shadow the shore for more than 20 miles. At Pismo Beach, known for the beds of Pismo clams within its sands, the “Coast Starlight” turns inland, trading the wide Pacific for California’s broad, fertile Central Valley.

Pacific Groove Recreation Trail
Projecting out from the northern tip of Monterey Peninsula is the diminutive town of Pacific Grove. Covering just 1700 acres, it is reached from Monterey along Lighthouse Avenue.
Better yet, pick up Ocean View Boulevard near Cannery Row and follow as it winds along Pacific Grove’s surf-washed shores. Costanoan Indians once dove for abalone in these waters.
By the 19th century, Pacific Grove had become a religious retreat. Methodist Episcopal ministers pitched a tent city and decreed that “bathing suits shall be provided with double crotches or with skirts of ample size to cover the buttocks.” The town was dry until 1969. Given the fish canneries in Monterey and teetotalers in this nearby town, local folks called the area “Carmel-by-the-Sea, Monterey-by-the-Smell, and Pacific Grove-by-God.”
Today Pacific Grove is a sleepy residential area decorated with Victorians, brown-shingle houses, and clapboard ocean cottages. The waterfront drive goes past rocky beaches to Point Pinos Lighthouse. When this beacon first flashed in 1855, it burned sperm oil. Little has changed except the introduction of electricity; this is the only early lighthouse along the entire California coast to be preserved in its original condition.
Sunset Drive continues along the sea to Asilomar State Park. Here sand dunes mantled with ice plant front a wave-lashed shore. There are tidepools galore, plus beaches for picnics, and trails leading through the dunes.
Pacific Grove’s major claim to fame lies in two areas several blocks inland: around George Washington Park on Meirose Street and in a grove at 1073 Lighthouse Avenue. This otherwise unassuming municipal ity is “Butterfly Town, U.S.A.” Every November, brilliant orange-and- black monarch butterflies migrate here, remaining until March. Some arrive from several hundred miles away to breed amid the cypress and oak trees. At night they cling to one another, curtaining the branches in clusters that sometimes number over a thousand. Then, at first light, they come to life, fluttering around the groves in a frenzy of wings and color.
Also of interest are the Pacific Grove Museum of Natural History (Central and Forest avenues; 408-372-4212), an excellent small museum; the ivy-cloaked cottage at 147 11th Street (not open to the public) where John Steinbeck lived and wrote Tortilla Flat, In Dubious Battle, and Of Mice and Men; plus Gosby House Inn (643 Lighthouse Avenue) and the Hart Mansion (now the Maison Bergerac Restaurant) next door, two elaborate old Victorian houses.

An overview to Cannery Row
Cannery Row found its name on John Steinbeck’s feisty novels Cannery Row and Sweet Thursday.
From an old sardine canning center, this oceanfront strip amazingly transformed into a neighborhood of wax museums and dainty antique shop.
The old Cannery Row of yore was a collection of corrugated warehouses, dilapidated stores, seedy hotels, and gaudy whorehouses. There were about 18 canneries, 100 fishing boats, and 4000 workers populating the place. The odor was horrible, but for several decades the sardine industry breathed life into the Monterey economy. The business died just before Cannery Row was published in 1945.
Before the entire oceanfront strip was developed in the early 1980s, you could still capture a sense of the old Cannery Row. A few weather beaten factories remained. Rust stained their ribbed sides, windows were punched, and roofs had settled to an inward curve. In places, the stone pilings of old loading docks still stood, haunted by seagulls. Now only tourists and memories remain.
At the other end of the Row, Steinbeck aficionados will find a few literary settings. La Ida Cafe has given way to Kalisa’s (851 Cannery Row), but retains the same tumbledown appearance; Wing Chong Market is now the Alicia’s Antiques (835 Cannery Row), and the building that housed Doc Rickett’s Marine Lab stands at 800 Cannery Row.
In the middle you’ll encounter the scene of the mailing of Cannery Row. Old warehouses have been renovated into shopping centers, new buildings have risen, and the entire area has experienced a face lift. Brightest tooth in the new smile is the Edgewater Packing Company, a miniature amusement park with a hand-carved carousel.
The latest addition is the Monterey Bay Aquarium, a state-of-the-art museum that re-creates the natural habitat of local sea life. Monterey Bay is one of the world’s biggest submarine canyons, deeper than the Grand Canyon. At the aquarium you’ll encounter about 100 display tanks representing the wealth of underwater life that inhabits this mineral-rich valley.
For instance, the Monterey Bay Tank, a 90-foot-long glass enclosure, portrays the local submarine world complete with sharks, brilliant reef fish, and creosote-oozing pilings. Another aquarium contains ama ture kelp forest crowded with fish. Together the many displays and exhibitions make it one of the world’s great aquariums.

Monterey demonstrates special care in preserving its heritage to prevent wharves and pier to fall from from tinsel-minded developers. Municipal Wharf No. 2, located at the foot of Figueroa Street, remains from the heyday of Monterey’s fishing fleet. Here broad-hulled boats still beat at their moorings, while landlubbing anglers cast from pierside. Gulls perch along the handrails, sea lions bark from beneath the pilings, and pelicans work the waterfront. While on the other side is the dilapidated warehouse of a long-defunct freezer company. At the end of the dock, fish companies still operate. It’s a primal place of cranes and pulleys, forklifts and conveyor belts. There are ice boxes and old packing crates scattered hither-thither, exuding the romance and stench of the industry.
Then there is the parody, much better known than the original. Fisherman’s Wharf, like its San Francisco namesake, has been transmogrifled into what the travel industry thinks tourists think a fishing pier should look like. Something was lost in the translation. Few fishing boats operate from the wharf these days; several charter companies sponsor tours and whale-watching expeditions. Otherwise the waterfront haven is just one more mall, a macadam corridor lined on either side with shops. There are ersatz art galleries, shops vending candy apples and personalized mugs, plus a school of seafood restaurants. A few outdoor fish markets still sell live crabs, lobsters, and squid, but the symbol of the place is the hurdy-gurdy man with performing monkey who greets you at the entrance.
Actually this is only the most recent in the wharfs long series of role changes. The dock was built in 1846 to serve cargo schooners dealing in hides. Within a decade the whaling industry took it over, followed finally by Italian fishermen catching salmon, cod, and mackerel. During the Cannery Row era of the ‘30s, the sardine industry played a vital part in the life of the wharf .Today all that has given way to a bizarre form of public nostalgia.
