Its an interesting point. America is a major area of tourism for “foreigners”. While it is true that America tourism with its dollar , and general lower cost of goods than some more socialistic and higher taxed areas – say as the U.K. and Europe – with their VATs ( value added taxes) , and Canada with its both its federal GST tax ( really a VAT with another name ) , provincial sales taxes and a whole host of other hidden and not so hidden forms of taxation on tourism and the tourism industries - America still represents more than good value for the dollar or other currency.
Still there is a great admiration of America as well as American’s throughout the world. Name one other country that is so emulated and copied in the world. Do you see European statues of say a figure as popular as kernel sanders kfc , Kentucky Fried Chicken fame ? Or homages to French Golden Arches of any type anywhere ? Yes the world seems to have a love / hate relationship with America and all things American .
Here is one such example :

In fact , all California was one grand disappointment when it came to historical discovery . It was a region that promised the richest of gold discoveries, but delivered none, was rumored to contain a ” Northwest Passage”, but in the end did not , and which was desolate , dangerous and most dangerous to reach. The British it seemed , virtually ignored it and the Spanish took more than two centuries to even began colonizing the place.
Then in 1768 , as Portola and Padres Juniperp Serra ventured Northwards , to establish a first mission in San Diego. the , what was destined to become , the California dream began. Portolla continued on to Los Angeles and followed a route which would become the fabled El Camino Real. Reaching San Francisco Bay , perhaps the first explorer to discover the site and sites. Later Captain Juan Bautista de Anza opened the territory northward and further north.
But it was Father Sierra . the hard driving Franciscan missionary , who wrote in the end the first chapters of the history of the coast. Between 1769 and 1823 , he and his successor , Padres Fermin Francisco de Lasuen , established a chain of 21 missions from San Diego to Sonoma. Fortified with presidos , they became the backbone of Spain’s and the Spanish colonial empire.

For years Spanish conquistadors in Mexico had pursued El Dorado , which was a mythical land ruled by a king whose subjects covered him in “gold dust”. Fransisco Vasquez de Coronado trekked off seeking the Seven Cities of Cibola from his base in Mexico City , Mexico. Hernan Cortes sent many numerous expeditions north from Mexico City in pursuit of untold riches and wealth. Though they found neither fabulous riches nor gilded cities, Calbrillo had discovered a new land , Alto California, which he promptly claimed for the Spanish crown.
To world powers , even unpromising land is a prize to be treasured as well as coveted. The British determined to thwart Spanish conquests in the New World, harried the Spanish and encouraged privateers to plunder the galleons. Sir Francis Drake , the most well known and famous of what was considered people of great fame and ethics by the British , but as dastardly cowards by the Spanish , happened upon the coast in 1579, possibly landing at Port Reyes and , naturally claiming this outpost of the British Empire.
This outpost of the British Empire , known to the British as Nova Albion, proved more significant to the Spanish. Since their ships , laden with luxurious goods from the Philippines , passed California en route to Mexico, they began seeking ports of call. In 1587 Pedro de Unamuno . a daring seaman swept down the coast past Cape Mendocino. lost his ship to a most ferocious storm in what was called or referred to as “Drake Bay”, then pressed on with 70 men in an open launch.
The next adelantado , or merchant adventurer. to take up the challenge of the coast was Sebastian Vizcaino. who chartered and named much of the California seacoast and shoreline , and so grossly exaggerated the harbor of Montererey that his mapmaker was eventually hanged. Vizcaino’s 1602 story proved so greatly distorted that when Juan Gspar de Portola , exploring California by land in 1760 , saw Monterey , he failed to recognize and identify it.

No other American city , and even few in the world , provide such close up viewing of the power and fury of the surf attacking as well as pounding on the shore and shoreline. From Land’s End in Lincoln Park , you can easily look fully across the “Golden Gate” , ( the name and term itself was originally given to the opening of San Fransico Bay long before the bridge was built and harkens back to the historic days of the California Gold Rush). , along to the Marin Headlands. Fromn the Cliff House south to the San Fransisco Zoo area , the Great Highway and Open Beach run along the western edge of the city.
It can be said that the wind is often strong along the shoreline, summer fog can blanket these ocean beaches along the western shoreline. As well the water is more than cold and chilly, never mind far too rough with all its currents for swimming. Escapees from Alcatraz Island can attest to the general power of water currents in the San Fransisco Bay areas.
