It can be said and detailed that by far the two most read and famous mystery novels and novelettes would include Frank Norris’s McTeague : A Story of San Fransisco, a violent tale of love and greed set at the turn of the 20′th century .     The second choice of a must read book , set in the Bay Area, would be Dashiell Hammett’s .  “The Maltese Falcon” .   Indeed Mr. Hammett might well be called an “American Master”.

The Maltese Falcon is a most steamy detective novel that captures the heart and seedier side of San Fransisco in the era of the 1920’s.

The northern California city of San Francisco , “Frisco” or the beautiful “city on the Bay”, was also and continues to be a popular setting for many books and indeed many movies as well. Mark Twain glorified the city in a collection of articles that finely detailed the city as “the liveliest , heartiest community on our continent”.

San Fransisco was also the birthplace of Jack London. The author Jack London wrote several stories in his younger years as as an oyster pirate on the San Fransisco Bay, as well as Martin Eden , his semi autobiographical account of life along the Oakland shores.

There are no shortage of  written materials for readers dealing with and concerning history and historical perspectives and backgrounds of California and is native California pioneers.  A rich perspective at that.  Although our current perspective of California being a lush almost Mediterranean climate place with all the oodles of modern conveniences whether it be by car or swimming pools it was not always that easy luxurious way.

Silnas native   John Steinbeck , can be considered one of the state’s classic authors. and painted a most vivid portrayl of early California proletarian life in the early to mid 1900’s.  His book “The Grapes of Wrath” remains a classic account of itinerant farm laborers coming into California in the midst of the Great Depression of the 1930’s.  “Canery Row” has forever made the Monterey waterfront famous and lastly “East of Eden” offers insight into the ways of life of Salinas,

Famed humoirst Mark Twain (Samuel Clements)  penned vivid tales during California’s “Gold Rush” including one of his most popular works “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calveras County”  ( an annual gold rush competition).  Other good  Gold Rush reads include Bret Harte’s “The Luck of the Roaring Camp”, a sentimental tale of hard luck minorsand their false toughness and J.S. Hollida’ys “The World Rushed In”, a very fine account of the California Gold Rush era.

In the rare event of an earthquake, you should know a few simple precautions that every California schoolchild is taught.  It is fairly simple and straightforward advice that is easy to follow as well as learn.   If you are in a tall building do not run outside;  instead promptly move away from the windows and towards the building’s center.  Crouch under a desk , or table, or stand against a wall or under a doorway.  If you are in bed , get under the bed , or in a doorway, or crouch under a sturdy piece of furniture.  When exciting the building. use stairwells not elevators.

If you are in your car, pull over promptly to the side of the road as soon as possible .  Stop the car. when you are away from bridges as well as overpasses.  As well steer clear of telephone or power poles and lines.  Best to stay protected in your automobile , van , truck or SUV.

Lastly if you are out walking or hiking enjoying the California weather and sites  stay away from trees , power lines and lastly the sides of buildings.
