Just north of Eureka is the most pleasant college town of Arcata , home of Humboldt State University. Arcata itself is one of the few California “burgs” that retains a town square. Arcata holds some restored Victorian buildings as well. The town square holds a farmer’s market on Tuesday evenings as well as Saturday mornings.
Next after takking the turnoff for the town of Trinidad. Trinidad is currently a town of a population of 300 souls.
Trinidad sports what could be called one of the most “splendid” harbours on the West Coast of the USA. It was 1595 when a Portugeuse fishing expedition first discovered and landed in the areas. The harbor cove sports some of the most beautifull rock formations that you will spot anywhere.

Across the bridge in Samoa is the Samoa Cookhouse , which is an example from the 1860’s of the cookhouses which stood in every lumber mill and mill town. Humboldt – Fort Humboldt – California Logging Industry History

At the south end of Eureka stands Fort Humboldt , which guarded settlers against the “Indians”, and is now a state historic park . Ulysses S. Grant was posted here in 1854. On the fort’s grounds are recreations of the logging industries earliest days, inluding a logging museum and a logger’s cabin.
To explore waters around Eureka take the Humboldt Bay Harbor Cruise. You can observe some of the regions wild life while sailing past fishing boats, sailing under the many local birds, past fishing boats , oyster beds , and old decaying timber mills.
