A monumental group of federal , state and city structures, San Francisco’s Civic Center stretches from Franklin Street to the intersection of Market Street, at the United Nations Plaza, Ornate City Hall, a model of French Renaissance grandeur, crowned by a lofty dome rising 300 feet above the ground , dominates Civic Center Park. The War Memorial Veteran’s Building. the San Fransisco Museum of Modern Art and the 911- Herbst Theatre, setting for intimate chamber building, concerts and other recitals. Its companion building, the War Memorial Opera House , site of the Union Nations Charter in 1945, is now home to the San Fransisco Opera and the San Fransisco Ballet.

Breathing new life into the Civic Center in the bold Performing Arts Center. Most of the money used in the construction of the handsome Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall , home of the San Fransisco Symphony.

Situated opposite the Opera House at Grove and Van Ness streets, the 3,000 seat conference hall provides a permanent home for the symphony, as well as expanded space for visiting performers.

The 49 Fourty Nine Mile Drive

San Francisco ’s excellent public transportation system, convenient touring schedules and compact size allow you to explore without ever getting into your car, van or S.U.V.

If you do drive, then one way to grasp the city is to follow the scenic 49 Mile Drive ; later you can return to explore on foot the places that interest you most. Well marked by blue , white and orange seagull signs, the fourty nine ( 49) mile drive is very easy to follow, through it does take you through the most congested streets of the downtown area. You should best allow approximately half a day to fully explore the sights along the route.

You can start anywhere, but here are some highlights beginning at the Civic Center on Van Ness Avenue and McAllister Street

Van Ness Avenue: Automobile Row : look for most elegant showrooms

Union Square: heart of the shopping district, downtown , bordered by Geary,Post , Powell and Stockton Streets

Chinatown : Grant Avenue leads through this exotic bustling community

North Beach : San Fransisco’s Italian community, the Bohemia - a region of most excellent and varied restaurants and a lively center of night life. Where Columbus Avenue crosses Grant and north of Fisherman’s Wharf

Telegraph Hill: Coit Tower crosses this site of spectacular bay and bay bridge views

Marina : Beautiful residences look out to Yacht Harbor across the Marina Green - favorite place for flying kites, walking dogs and jogging and sunbathing

Palace of Fine Arts “Temporary” structure for the 1015 Panama - Place International Exposition
