If you are new to California and Northern California or not not you will be energized by the variety of offerings - San Francisco, the Great Northland;s charismatic cities : burgeoning Bay Area attractions, historic Monterey and charming Carmel: the towering redwoods ( Fortuna is the gateway to the Northern California Redwoods) and the major scenic north coast seashore; wine tasting; majestic mountains, foothill villages founded by gold.

Outdoor activities are as varied as the area. The athletically inclined have choice from parcourse or golf courses. Tennis buffs can get in a few good sets at public parks or private resorts. Water enthusiasts are in their element, as boats dot San Fransisco Bay Area, ply the delta or tow water skiers on large lakes, other trailer their craft to remote bodies of water.

In the Sierra Nevada- the main water sports area in Northern California - most water ski resorts cluster around Lake Tahoe. Other skiing centers are in the Donner Summit area around State Highway 86, U.S. 50 and Interstate 80 and at Yosemite National Park.

In some California State Parks there is a 7 to 15 day camping limit during the heavy use period ( usually Jun1 through September) . Extended limits apply to most state parks the rest of the year. Camping fees are based on the type of campsite. Best to contact the California Department of Parks and Recreation in Sacaemento.

Though reservations are not recquired for camping at most state parks , they are advised for the summer months, holidays and weekends.

National park and forest campsites are available on a first come , first serve basis except during the summer months, when many national forest campgrounds ( notably Yosemite National Park) are available on a reservation only basis either by phone , mail , email on the website. Major cities and resort areas usually have plenty of hotel and motel spaces. If you want to stay at a particular place or if you are traveling during the peak summer period or on a weekend , especially a long weekend, it is best to make reservations.

If you are not certain of where to stay , write or email to local chamber of commerce or tourist bureaus. They wil offer listing of accommodation and accommodations.
