Northern California ( including the area surrounding Fortuna) has three distinct climatic zones. Coastal temperatures are mild the year around ; rarely will there be extremes in temperature. Fog frequently blankets the coast during the summer. especially in the morning and evening , and in winter it rains.
As you inland , the seasons become more pronounced. Summers become hotter ( with relatively little humidity), winters colder ( with occasional snow). The Sierra Nevada has the most dramatic seasonal changes. Summer days are warm , ideal for outdoor recreation; extreme temperatures bring a crispness to the air and dramatic fall colors . heavy snowfalls during the winter make the mountains a mecca for skiers.
