The Cannery

The Cannery is similar to Ghardelli Square in some ways. Bounded by Beach, Leavenworth and Jefferson Streets, it was originally constructed in 1894 to house the Del Monte Fruit and Vegetable Cannery. Today the brick building with its concrete walkaways has been restored and refurbished.

The Cannery contains three levels of shopping and eating pleasures. You can buy an assortment of goods from contemporary household furnishings to primitive art objects. Other shops include such items as candles, fine foods and wine apparel , linens, flowers, books and pet supplies. If you not into shopping , or just want to rest- stop at one of the many outdoor cafes. You can enjoy a puppet or mime show- there may even be a “human jukebox” to entertain you.

Outside escalators and stairs provide access to different floors or you can take a glass enclosed elevator from the ground floor to the very top. From the third floor you can see Alcatraz Island, the Bay Bridge and Coit Tower.

On the west side of The Cannery is a plaza containing a small garden center, outside tables, and an oyster bar. Other restaurants feature Oriental , Thai, Mexican , French and English Food.
