The symbolic Lone Cypress
From Pacific Grove, 17 Mile Drive leads to Pebble Beach, one of America’s most lavish communities. This place is so exclusive that the rich charge $5 to anyone wishing to visits their place.
The gate fee might be irritating but this is an extraordinary place that must not be missed. The road winds through pine groves down to a wind-combed beach.
There are miles of rolling dunes tufted with sea vegetation. The oceanfront can be as cool and damp as it is beautiful, so carry a sweater or jacket, or better yet, both. Among the first spots you’ll encounter is Spanish Bay, where Juan Gaspar de Portola camped during his 1769 expedition up the California Communities.
If you visit Point Joe, the unity of ocean currents create a wild frothing sea that has drawn several ships to their doom. Seal and Bird Rocks, true to their nomenclature, are carpeted with sea lions, cormorants, harbor and leopard seals, and gulls. Throughout this thriving 17 Mile Drive area are black-tail deer, pelicans, sooty shearwaters, sea otters, and, during migration periods, California gray whales.
There are crescent beaches and granite headlands as well as vista points for scanning the coast. You’ll also pass the Lone Cypress, the solitary tree on a rocky point that has become as symbolic of Northern California as perhaps the Golden Gate Bridge. Monterey cypresses such as this one grow nowhere in the world but along Carmel Bay.
The private homes en route are mansions, exquisite affairs fashioned from marble and fine hardwoods. Some appear like stone fortresses, others seem made solely of glass. They range from American Colonial to futuristic and were designed by noted architects like Bernard Maybeck, Julia Morgan, and Willis Polk.
This is also home to several of the world’s most renowned golf courses—Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill, and Cypress Point—where the AT&T at Pebble Beach Pro-Am Tournament takes place each year. More than the designer homes and their celebrity residents, these courses have made Pebble Beach a place fabled for wealth and beauty.
The best part of the drive lies along the coast between the Pacific Grove and Carmel gates. Along the backside of 17 Mile Drive, where it loops up into Del Monte Forest, there are marvelous views of Monterey Bay and the San Gabilan Mountains. Here also is Huckleberry Hill, a forest of Monterey and Bishop pine freckled with bushes.
Numerous artist around the world found their inspiration for their flora and fauna paintings after seeing the greatness of the location. They were amazed by the beauty of the famous coastal landmark, as well as the relaxing environment. One them is the American Impressionist Arthur Hill Gilbert, a co-founding member of the Carmel Art noted for his remarkable canvases such as the “View of 17 Mile Drive,” as well “The Cove” in 1930.
